A digital switch is a device used to convert the spoken word or mathematical terminology into electrical signals (machine compatible language) for the purpose of controlling the function, mode or status of electrical or electronic equipment commonly referred to as "digital equipment."
A digital switch is actually one module of an almost infinitely variable switching system. Mechanically, it is a simple device usually constructed using on one moving sub-assembly. This sub-assembly usually consists of the rotating dial, its associated actuator and its captive commutator brushes. During manufacture this sub-assembly and its associated detent spring are sandwiched between the switch case and a printed circuit board to complete assembly of the individual switch module. Functionally, a digital switch is a finger-actuated commutator capable of performing dozens of simple to complex coded switching functions.
